  • Firsby Res: Mallard - 5 - Left at dawn ; Moorhen - 1 - Feeding in sluice. ; Grey Wagtail - 1 ; Tawny Owl - 2 - 1 calling up stream from main Res, other from Ravenfield Ponds. ; 319 - 1 - Calling at dawn. ; Jackdaw - 6 - Through at dawn. ; Redwing - 2 - Over calling in dark. ; Fieldfare - 20+ - Still feeding on fallen apples plenty left to go at. ; Blackbird - 10+ - With Fieldfare and singles on path feeding at dawn. ; Bullfinch - 12+ ; Pheasant - 2+ - Calling at dawn.
  • Frecheville: Waxwing - 13+ - 3 near Birley Hotel (Heathfield Road) at 12:30, plus at least 10 on Birley Moor Road between Linley Lane and Hopefield Avenue.
  • Froggatt: Nuthatch - 1
  • Hangingwater garden: Blackcap - 1 - male briefly. First sighting of winter
  • Kimberworth: Song Thrush - 1 - Investigating a plant tub and nearby ground in our garden
  • Leash Fen: Great Grey Shrike - 1 - Showing distantly from Ramsley Gate 13:50
  • Manor: Waxwing - 1 - briefly in tree at former fire station on Mansfield Road at 10:18.
  • Moorgate, Rotherham: Blackcap - 1 - male - feeding on suet block
  • Norwood Allotments: Pink-footed Goose - 19 - over west at 10:45 ; Waxwing - 5 - 5 flying at around 12:00. 2 split off and flew south, 3 left north.
  • Onesmoor: Lapwing - 40 - heading west .
  • Orgreave Lakes: Pink-footed Goose - 1 - with Bean Goose ; BEAN GOOSE (Tundra/Taiga) - 1 - Present until 15:10 then flew E with first departing Greylags. ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w in pre-roost, record shot.
  • Padley: Woodpigeon - 80+ - Over
  • R Derwent, Calver: Goosander - 3 - 2m, 1f ; Tufted Duck - 1f
  • R Derwent, Calver Mill: Mandarin - 15m,7f
  • Ravenfield Church: Pink-footed Goose - 100+ - South at 08:30
  • Redmires Top Res: Curlew - 1 - Single bird heard and presumably same bird seen flying to over Roper Hill shortly after.
  • Sheffield Centre: Pink-footed Goose - 80+ - 80+ SW over Arundel Gate at 08:50 ; Redwing - 155+ - flock communal singing at St George's Church ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - over St George's
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Pochard - 11 ; Tufted Duck - 15 ; Gadwall - 5 ; Snipe - 2 ; Pink-footed Goose - c90 - west at 08.30 ; Black-headed Gull - 200 ; Common Gull - 4 ; Jay - 2 ; Mistle Thrush - 1 - singing ; Fieldfare - c15 ; Meadow Pipit - 12 ; 319 - 1 ; Kestrel - 2
  • Ulley CP: BEAN GOOSE (Tundra/Taiga) - 1 - with GLGs in usual field. Flew NE [to Orgreave] at 10.00 due to shoot in field over road. ; Pink-footed Goose - 1 - also with GLGs.
  • Weston Park: Wigeon - 1 - female still present. Same as Weston Park, and perhaps Neepsend and Tyzack's Dam, in previous years?

Friday 6th January 2017

  • Cemetery Ave: Waxwing - 73 - "Trilling" away very melodically on the Big Lime tree next to the Entrance to the Cemetery at 15:19. They then flew off 'en masse' towards the city.
  • Dore back garden: Lesser Redpoll - 1 - at feeder, first observed of winter ; Siskin - 2 - first observed of winter ; Brambling - 3 - inc 2m, first observed of winter, odd that all three show up on the same morning ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - large female dissecting blackbird, 4 clear white spots on back ; Goldcrest - 1 ; Brambling - 1 - f, 4th today ; Coal Tit - 1
  • Ecclesall: Waxwing - 7 - 7 in remaining mature trees on Cemetery Ave - still present at 12:55 ; Pink-footed Goose - c200 - Moving NW at 10.40. ; Waxwing - 12 - again on Cemetery Avenue ; Redwing - c20 - on Cemetery Avenue ; Waxwing - 65+ - 42 briefly landed Cemetery Avenue shortly before dusk plus c.25 over
  • Hollinsend Road,United Reform Church: Waxwing - 10 - Eating berries front of church
  • Manor: Waxwing - 31 - 19 at Windy House Lane late morning, 31 present 13:40 ; Waxwing - 30 - circa 30 on Windy House Lane ; Waxwing - 30 - another photo ; Waxwing - 30 - another photo
  • Moorfoot: Redwing - 50+ - in Sorbus trees on edge of Waitrose car park
  • Norfolk park: Waxwing - 50+ - In poplar tree on Donnington Road at 10:00
  • Norton Lees: Waxwing - 1+ - Heard over Warminster Rd at 8:25
  • Norwood Allotments: Pink-footed Goose - c90 - over west at 10:45
