  • Catcliffe Flash: Mute Swan - 2+ - ad pr + 4 young ; Gadwall - 20+ - inc young ; Mallard - 60+ ; Pochard - 6+ ; Moorhen - 2+ ; Coot - c40 - numbers building as weed growth blooms ; Little Grebe - 8+ - 3 occupied nests, 2+ young ; Black-headed Gull - 9+
  • Chapeltown: Swift - 20+ - Screaming family parties over Burncross Rd last few evenings
  • Emlin Moor, Agden: Hobby - 1 - chasing moths ?
  • Keppels Field: Linnet - 1pr - male in full song ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - over from W; left N/NE
  • Midhope: Red Kite - 2
  • Moorland Fringe: Nightjar - 5+ - At least three separate males (two heard churring simultaneously, followed by third male from a different location) and two different male/female pairs seen. ; Nightjar - 3+ ; Nightjar - 3+ - photo
  • Orgreave Lakes: Common Sandpiper - 1 - One on shore of small lake, flew on to island ; Common Tern - 3 - Two on shore of island in small lake, flew off towards large lake. 3 Common Tern flew back about 10 minutes later heading towards RVCP
  • R Don, Eastwood; Grafton Bridge: Sand Martin - 9 - feeding over
  • R Don, Norfolk Bridge: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - 3rd summer/4cy on weir briefly ; Black-headed Gull - 150+ - Large flock of Gulls (300+) over Effingham St tonight, including LBBG and Herrings, feeding on flying Ant emergence.
  • Rawmarsh Hill: Kestrel - 1 - hunting
  • Redmires Middle Res: Black-tailed Godwit - 1 ; Black-tailed Godwit - 1 - still present at 19:45
  • Redmires Res: Black-tailed Godwit - 1 - adult in summer plumage - still present in early evening
  • Rotherham Centre; Don Canal: Sand Martin - 8 - feeding over water
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Common Sandpiper - 1 ; Little Grebe - 6+ - now three pairs feeding young

Tuesday 3rd July 2018

  • Birley Edge: Green Woodpecker - 1 - on grass bank by side of Edgewell Crescent
  • Brightside: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 - Two adult calling frantically and mobbing workmen working on roof of factory on Carwood Road. Young present?
  • Canklow: Pheasant - 7 - 1 female with 6 Juveniles on AMG feeding on works field. 07.15
  • Cowell Flat: Barn Owl - 1 - hunting by the roadside.
  • Endcliffe Park: Mallard - 4+ - 4 newly hatched ducklings ; Swift - 2
  • Forge Dam: Grey Heron - 2 - 1 flew in but was chased away by moorhen with chick ; Moorhen - 3 - 1 chick ; Mallard - 2+ - 2 young ducklings ; Mandarin - 10 - 2 females 7 8 juveniles ; 319 - 1
  • Hillsborough Park: Mute Swan - 6 - 3 adults plus a brood of 3 ; Canada Goose - 84 - Including 4 goslings ; 324 - 1 - Canada X Barnacle Goose hybrid still present ; Greylag Goose - 1 - plus with odd mainly white bird with orange legs (presumably some sort of hybrid) ; Coot - 1+ - including approximately 5 broods ; Mallard - 1+ - including fairly fresh brood of 4
  • Owlerton: Kestrel - 1 - landed on lights in dog track car park.
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre: Carrion Crow - 8 - foraging on low water line; probably 2 family parties
  • R Sheaf, Sheffield Centre: Dipper - 1 - 100 yards upstream from Granville sq roundabout

Monday 2nd July 2018

  • Botanical Gardens: Dunnock - 3 - pr+juv ; Swift - 20-25 - Largest count this year ; Blackbird - 3 - 3 ad m on one neighbouring house roof. 1 singing, 2 looking unhappy.
  • Burbage Valley: Snipe - 1 - 'chipping' from lower valley
  • Canklow: Kestrel - 1 - Flew from office block to cctv pole in AMG works 07.15
  • Dog Kennel Pond: Great Crested Grebe - 1+ ; Mallard - 10+ ; Moorhen - 1+ ; Coot - 1+ ; Black-headed Gull - 1+ ; Kingfisher - 1
  • Kimberworth: Bullfinch - 1 - Juvenile on seed feeder. Adults regular daily visitors
  • Kimberworth Park: Swift - 2 - One at nest under eaves on Remount Road
  • Leash Fen: Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - reeling
  • Moorland Fringe: Nightjar - 7+ - Churring from 3 sites. Video grab image.
