  • R Don, Norfolk Bridge: 335 - 1 - at c18:30 to c19:30 when flew towards town
  • Ramsley Moor: Stonechat - 2+ - 2 adults with 1+ juv ; Whinchat - 2+ - Family group of 2 adults, 4 juvs
  • Ramsley Res: Coal Tit - 1 - Taking food to nest ; Whitethroat - 2 - 2 downy fledged juvs
  • Redmires conduit: Red Kite - 1

  • Redmires Plantation: Siskin - 4 - feeding on thistle heads with goldfinches and chaffinches.

  • Catcliffe Flash: Mute Swan - 2+ - ad pr + 4 yng ; Gadwall - 6+ ; Mallard - 60+ ; Shoveler - 1 - eclipse male ; Pochard - 6+ ; Little Grebe - 5 - 3 ad, 2 juv ; Moorhen - 5+ - inc young ; Coot - 45+ ; Black-headed Gull - 1 - juv ; Sand Martin - 6+
  • Chapeltown: Swift - 25-30 - Screaming overhead most evening in a group
  • Dore village: Swift - 14 - screaming party, highest count to date
  • Dukes Road: Meadow Pipit - c78 - loose group disturbed from heather . ; Wren - 1 - singing ; Red Grouse - 14 - several family parties .
  • Fulwood: Swift - 30 - single flock overhead screaming and feeding; my largest gathering this year ; House Martin - 8 - overhead with Swifts - presumed from Moorside breeding site: numbers well down this year
  • Fulwood garden: Blackbird - 2+ - adult pair with 3 fledged juvs, one killed on the ground by Magpie ; Magpie - 1 - killed juv Blackbird on the ground with parents in attendance unable to see it off ; Jackdaw - 12 - several family parties on roof and in trees early morning
  • Fulwood Head: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - adult eating dead rabbit on road
  • Green Moor: Little Owl - 4+ - 2 Adults and at least 2 owlets ; Little Owl - 4 - Adult photo
  • Hathersage: Swift - 12+ - at 11:30
  • Hope: Swift - 4 ; House Martin - 1 - on wires, Edale Rd
  • Howden Res: Swallow - c50 - many juvs, congregating on moor above windy corner
  • Jaunty Park: Goldcrest - 5 - small group of very vocal+active birds.possibly family party. ; Pied Wagtail - 10 - feeding on field 07:35. ; Mistle Thrush - 7 ; Starling - 15 ; Swift - 6 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - adult on field 07:35
  • Middleton Moor: Curlew - 7 ; Lapwing - 3 - 2 adults, 1 juv ; Black-headed Gull - 7 - 4 adults, 3 juvs ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 ; Tufted Duck - 2 ; 320 - 1
  • Millhouses Lane garden: Bullfinch - 6+ - including 4 juveniles feeding on sunflower hearts and drinking from bird bath
  • Moorland Fringe: Nightjar - 3+
  • Moscar Cross: Curlew - 2 - ad and well grown juv in roadside fields
  • R Don, Effingham St: Moorhen - 4 - two pairs with recently hatched small chicks, broods of 3 and 4. ; Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - juv briefly

Wednesday 11th July 2018

  • Canklow Woods: Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - 1 reeling 1950
  • Dore: Dunnock - 1+ - An adult feeding 2 fledged young in observer’s garden.
  • Firsby Res: Moorhen - 6 - Family party ; Grey Heron - 1 - Fishing in shallows. ; Lapwing - 1 - On mud. ; Kestrel - 1 ; Swallow - 1
  • Millhouses Lane/Silverdale Road junction: Swift - 9+ - flying, sometimes low, over the rooftops
  • Orgreave Lakes: Black-tailed Godwit - 1 ; Black-tailed Godwit - 1 - still present at 10:45
  • Pitsmoor: Red Kite - 1 - circling overhead at 15.00
  • R Don, 5 Weirs Walk: Kingfisher - 1 - Juvenile female kingfisher
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; Chantry Bridge: Sand Martin - 11 - over/around colony, inc 2 seen leaving nest hole beneath Bridge Inn
  • Redmires Middle Res: Common Sandpiper - 3
  • Redmires Top Res: Spotted Flycatcher - 3 - Feeding in plantation
  • Ringinglow: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2
  • Rotherham Centre; Frederick Street: Peregrine - 1 - circled briefly before leaving SE at speed @ 0755hrs
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Grey Heron - 1 - in SW corner of lagoon at 07.20, presumably attracted by big numbers of frogs at the moment
  • Stannington garden: Swift - 8 - First swifts observed this year from garden
