  • Dog Kennel Pond: Blackbird - 1+ ; Wren - 1+ ; Coal Tit - 1+ - 1 singing and 1juv bathing in overflow. ; Nuthatch - 1 - calls
  • Moorland fringe: Nightjar - 6 - 3 flying, 3 churring ; 319 - 1 - Calling from Redmires Plantation
  • Morley Pond: Great Crested Grebe - 7+ - 2 fam parties, ; Grey Heron - 5 - around shallow area bet Scholes Ground and Low Common. ; Mallard - 1+ ; Tufted Duck - 8 - 3 female with 5 juvs bet Cascades and Pond, ; Swallow - 4+ ; Kingfisher - 1 ; Reed Bunting - 1 - singing ; 319 - 1
  • Redmires Top Res: Little Egret - 1 - still on dam wall ; Yellow-legged Gull - 1
  • Rotherham Centre: Mute Swan - 3 - N/NE @ 0830hrs ; Cormorant - 01-Feb - 1 N/NE @ 0946hrs; 1 (or same) SW, then back NE @ 1417hrs ; Common Buzzard - 1 - circled low @ 0830hrs & left N

Tuesday 16th July 2019

  • Bents Green: 324 - 1 - Hummingbird Hawk-moth on Lavender in garden near Bents Green School
  • Castle Dyke Playing Fields: Swallow - c. 50 - including 30+ juvs perched on wire fence enclosing cricket nets
  • Graves Park: Ring-necked Parakeet - 2
  • Malin Bridge: Swift - 20+ - Parties of 20+ screaming flying up and down Norris road below roof level,before climbing high up and joining other swifts.
  • Moorland fringe: Nightjar - 4+ - Four churring, three seen in flight
  • Orgreave Lakes: Little Egret - 6 ; Dunlin - 3 - North
  • Psalter Lane: Swift - c15 - Screaming between the rooftops
  • R Don, Attercliffe: Lesser Black-backed Gull - c70 - including first juvenile birds (one independent juv, and a second younger only just fledged bird), and a new Norway (Bergen) ringed 4cy, Warren Street/Norfolk Bridge ; Herring Gull - c15 - including 'white winged' 2cy.
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre: Sand Martin - c15 - numbers now much reduced; feeding, often very low, particularly over Forge Island. No activity noted around main colony since recent inundation.
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; adjacent Forge Island: Black-headed Gull - 1 - 'ginger' juv/1cy briefly; left downriver ; Grey Wagtail - 1 - feeding in shoals
  • Redmires Top Res: Little Egret - 1 - Flew into conifers at 20:15 ; Common Gull - 1 - adult
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Green Sandpiper - 1 - on pool at southern end briefly at 07.20
  • Stubley Hollow: House Sparrow - 38 ; Swallow - 16 ; Chiffchaff - 2
  • Wharncliffe Side: Kingfisher - 1 - flying north up the River Don ; Sand Martin - 1 ; Crossbill - 2 - over the village calling

Monday 15th July 2019

  • Broomhall, Southgrove Road: Swift - 6 - One confirmed and one prob nest site
  • Ecclesall: Swift - 40 - gathering of 40 plus birds over Button Hill in the evening
  • Morehall Res: Moorhen - 2 ; Great Crested Grebe - 3 - 1 adult with 2 chicks on board ; Mallard - 06-Oct ; Magpie - 3 ; Jay - 1 ; 321 - 2 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Song Thrush - 1 ; Nuthatch - 1 ; Wren - 03-May ; Chiffchaff - 2 ; Willow Warbler - 1 ; Blackbird - 6 ; Woodpigeon - 4 ; Carrion Crow - 1
  • Nether Green: Ring-necked Parakeet - 1 - Flew East towards Endcliffe Park, calling
  • Orgreave Lakes: Little Egret - 5 - On fencing between lakes,1 on Rother leaving site,1of previous seen ? ; Common Sandpiper - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 4 - Well grown young.
  • R Don, Effingham St: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - 3cy on weir
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; Keppel Wharf: Sand Martin - 1pr - still visiting nest under coping stones of wall over river
  • Redmires Middle Res: Oystercatcher - 1 - fully grown juv ; Whitethroat - 1 ; Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - 2x3cy and an adult with small Gull congregation.
  • Redmires Top Res: Little Egret - 1 - still present in evening, flew to plantations to roost. ; Common Sandpiper - 4
  • Shalesmoor: Mediterranean Gull - 1 - adult over with large gull flock (200+ birds) feeding on flying ants 18:30 ; Kestrel - 1 - ad male feeding with Gulls on flying ants. ; Mediterranean Gull - 1 - adult overhead with large Gull flock feeding on flying ants
  • Thrybergh CP: Great Crested Grebe - 2 ; Mute Swan - 9 - 7ad 3y ; Canada Goose - 30 - now trying to fly ; Tufted Duck - 29 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - north ; Kestrel - 1 - jv ; Hobby - 1 - east at 0930 ; Oystercatcher - 1 ; Black-headed Gull - 45 ; Herring Gull - 2 - 1ad 13cy ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 - 13cy 1ad w ; Common Sandpiper - 1 ; Swift - 20 ; Yellow Wagtail - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 1 ; Pied Wagtail - 4 - 3jv 1ad ; Blackcap - 8 - inc.3 singing + fam.4 ; Whitethroat - 2 - juv ; Reed Warbler - 6+ - prob many more jvs call from r/bed ; Lesser Whitethroat - 1 ; Willow Warbler - 3 - 2 singing, 1 collecting food ; Chiffchaff - 5 - 2 singing ; Reed Bunting - 4 - singing
