Friday 2nd March 2018

  • R Don, Kelham Island: Kingfisher - 1 - One of last years juvenile males fishing below the Upper Don walk near Kelham Island.
  • R Don, Newhall Rd: Kestrel - 1 - calling
  • R Don, Norfolk Bridge: Cormorant - 3 - circled and dropped on River and started feeding. White headed adult, non breeding adult and imm.
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Dunlin - 1 - feeding at the edge of the Don
  • Redmires conduit: Peregrine - 1 - over, also Kestrel
  • Shepherd Wheel: Kingfisher - 2 - seen together ; Goldcrest - 1
  • Wadsley Common garden: Blackbird - 6 - all males. ; Song Thrush - 1 ; Fieldfare - 2 - First in garden since February 2012.
  • Walkley garden: Fieldfare - 3 - 3 flying around gardens. ; Song Thrush - 1 - Accompanying fieldfares, discovered remaining cotoneaster berries. ; Blackcap - 1 - Single male at feeding stations. Regular sightings through Jan and Feb.
  • Whiteley Woods: Dipper - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 4 ; Song Thrush - 2

Thursday 1st March 2018

  • Ansell Road: Fieldfare - 45 - Feeding on apples in observer garden. 32 Starlings, Blackcap and Pied Wagtail among other birds present.
  • Bingham Park: 320 - 4 - 2 males, 2 females on lower pond ; Nuthatch - 1 ; Goldcrest - 1
  • Bingham Park/Whiteley Woods: Snipe - 1 - In Porter Brook 200yds downstream of Shepherd Wheel ; Meadow Pipit - 1 - Looking very hungry and forlorn ; 320 - 4 - 2 pairs 200 yards downstream of Shepherd Wheel along with Kingfisher, Snipe, Meadow Pipit, Redwing and Fieldfare in the vicinity
  • Bole Hill Rec: Woodcock - 1 - flew from trees near flats on Bole Hill Road
  • Brinsworth: Fieldfare - 1 - Garden,sat on Ivy bush 8.00
  • Charlton Brook, High Green: Jay - 1 - Seen with small mammal prey victim high in tree ; Fieldfare - c10 - Roving group ; Goldfinch - c20 - Single chattering group
  • Crosspool : Redwing - 1 - Darwin Lane
  • Ecclesall: Fieldfare - Up to 24 - Flock of up to 24 flew over garden in easterly direction this morning at 09:00; 3 or 4 later seen in back garden.
  • Ecclesall garden: Mistle Thrush - 1 - Landed on bird table for a few moments but departed without feeding.
  • Ecclesfield: Fieldfare - 4 - Cross Hill
  • Garden in Nether Green: Fieldfare - 3 - moving about trees in back garden
  • Halfway: Redwing - 1 - In garden
  • High Storrs: Fieldfare - 8 - In road side bushes Highcliffe Drive.
  • Hillsborough: Fieldfare - 17 - in garden ash tree
  • Holmebrook Valley Park: Common Gull - 2 - On frozen over lake ; Black-headed Gull - 50+ - On ice ; Canada Goose - 4 - 2 when I got there and another 2 landed at 16:45. ; Great Crested Grebe - 1 - On end of lake that was not frozen. ; Tufted Duck - 3 - 2 Males and 1 Female ; Mute Swan - 3 - All 3 now on lake again. They were reportedly not on the lake earlier in the day. They probably went to Linacre Reservoir as the lake at Holmebrook Valley was frozen over. ; Bullfinch - 10 - Birds showing very well in bushes on east side of lake.
  • Lodge Moor: Song Thrush - 1 - Along with 4 Fieldfare, 7 Blackbirds, Great spotted Woodpecker, 2 Brambling, Collared Dove, 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Robins, 5 Blue tit, 2 Great tit, 1 Coal tit, 6 House Sparrow, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Goldfinches, dunnocks, Woodpigeon, Feral pigeons,Magpies, Crows, Rooks,, Jackdaws, Starlings
  • Millhouses: Fieldfare - 1 - Starling-14, House Sparrow - 10,Blackbird -5, Goldfinch -4, Feral Pigeon-3, Robin-2, Blue Tit-2, Collared Dove - 2, Magpie - 2, Carrion Crow - 2, Wood Pigeon -1, Dunnock -1 ; Fieldfare - 10 - In Springfield Rd garden
  • Millhouses Garden: Fieldfare - 1 ; Redwing - 1 ; Pied Wagtail - 1 - A first for the garden - trying to take food from the feeders
  • Millhouses Park: Kingfisher - 1
  • Moorgate, Rotherham: Fieldfare - 14 - feeding on the last of the berries in the garden.
  • Orgreave Lakes: Wigeon - 110 - On Small Lake ; Dunlin - 2 - 2 then down to 1 after falling prey to Peregrine ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Peregrine - 1 - Male came in from north and after several aerial attacks successfully caught a near exhausted Dunlin. ; Ringed Plover - 3 - Around southern edge of Big Lake ; Lapwing - c.150 ; Snipe - 6 ; Stonechat - 1 - fem by Small Lake
  • Queens Park, Chesterfield: Common Gull - 1 - Juvenile lake with BH Gulls. ; Black-headed Gull - 30+ - On lake ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 4 - With BH Gulls.
  • Whiteley Woods: Sparrowhawk - 1 - Displaying briefly ; Dipper - 2 ; 320 - 3

Wednesday 28th February 2018

  • Abbeydale Road: Lapwing - 3 - Three birds NE near Mount Pleasant Park
  • Baslow SF: Meadow Pipit - 14 - Feeding on snow covered filters in freezing conditions ; Mandarin - 25 ; Dipper - 1 - First here for a while
  • Bingham Park: Kingfisher - 1 - Male in lower pond
  • Brecks, Rotherham: Golden Plover - 20+ - flew S. ; Fieldfare - c20 - in garden at 1630
  • Charnley Close, Ecclesall: Fieldfare - 24 - feeding on apples in garden, accompanied by a single Redwing
  • Crookes Valley Park: Wigeon - 1 - the 'Weston Park' female ; Mallard - 62 ; Moorhen - 5 ; Coot - 4 ; Black-headed Gull - 37
  • Deepar/Garden: Reed Bunting - 2 - male and female feeding on ground on mixed seed ; Starling - 20+ - feeding on feeders etc ; Robin - 1 ; Long-tailed Tit - 2 - Briefly flew into cherry tree but left after a couple of minuets ; Rook - 2 - now regular everyday to table for whatever is on offer ; Jackdaw - 8 ; House Sparrow - 12+ ; Dunnock - 1 ; Blue Tit - 2
  • Endcliffe Park: Redwing - 2 ; Redwing - 2 ; Grey Heron - 1 - Lower pond ; Goldcrest - 2 - With Redwing & Song Thrush ; Song Thrush - 3
  • Foxhill Crescent: Fieldfare - 15 - About 15
  • Fulwood: Fieldfare - 8 - in observer's snow-covered garden this morning, feeding on berries; unusual here ; Collared Dove - 1 - in observer's garden, singing between the snow flurries
  • Garden in Nether Green: Goldcrest - 1 - feeding in bushes in front garden
  • Hangingwater garden + adjacent: Blackbird - 14 - 8m + 6f
  • Hillsborough: Lapwing - 35 - flying low heading east in heavy snow .
  • Hillsborough Park: Mallard - 125+ - 125-130 plus 7 domestic types ; Tufted Duck - 1 - male
