  • Redmires Top Res: Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - viewed for 2 minutes in roadside conifers.

  • Salmon Pastures: Pheasant - 1 - Male flushed from bank of river Don
  • Shirecliffe: Stonechat - 1 - on old tip ; Swallow - 15 - W ; Skylark - 2 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Chiffchaff - 5 - 2 singing ; Chaffinch - 6 - N ; Jay - 5
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Canada Goose - 58 - south ; Greylag Goose - 6 - south with Canadas ; Shoveler - 1 ; Gadwall - 2 ; Little Grebe - 6 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 2 ; Pied Wagtail - 3 ; Stonechat - 2 - in reeds and low scrub beyond southern end of lagoon ; Jackdaw - 3 - 3 singles north ; Skylark - c.25 - south in ones and twos, one flock of 9 ; Jay - 6 ; Stock Dove - 4 ; Chiffchaff - 1 - singing ; Cormorant - 1 - on lagoon early morning, departed west
  • Waterthorpe: Pink-footed Goose - 150 - 200 - 2 Skeins flying over calling at 09:15
  • White Edge Moor: Ring Ouzel - 3 - Flying between silver birch and rowan trees.

Monday 24th September 2018

  • Bradwell: Grey Wagtail - 1 - Resident in stream
  • Brightside: GANNET - 1 - a juv flew east over President Park at 16:30 ; Common Buzzard - 5 - circling together mid am ; Sparrowhawk - 1
  • Canklow Woods: Common Buzzard - 3 - 3 in the air together at 1300 ; Common Buzzard - 6 - in the air together at 1500
  • Chapeltown: Peregrine - 1 - Falcon SP. Thought to be a Peregrine. Circled a few times calling before heading north.
  • Five Weirs Walk: Kingfisher - 2 - 2nd brood - probably fledged around late August/early September. ; Little Egret - 1 - Flying over and being pursued by a grey heron, heading west. ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - Male hunting along the trees that line the River Don.
  • Green Moor: Tawny Owl - 2 - Pair calling
  • Middleton Moor: Shelduck - 1 ; Wigeon - 1 ; Pied Wagtail - 150+ - Roosting ; Black-headed Gull - 125 ; Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - 2 adults, 1 1st W ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 650+ - Birds still coming in
  • R Don, Effingham St: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - 1w ; Kingfisher - 2 - calling and chasing
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Lesser Black-backed Gull - c250 - loafing on waste ground 19:00 ; Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - limping adult ; Great Black-backed Gull - 4 - 3 ad, 1 2cy ; Common Gull - 1 - 1cy ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w, presumed same bird previously at Effingham St ; Little Egret - 2 - 1 fishing upstream, one downstream then flew E ; Ring-necked Parakeet - 1 - heard only
  • Redmires Top Res: Crossbill - 1 - in roadside trees
  • Scraper Low: Kestrel - 1 - Hovering
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Whooper Swan - 4 - in from north at 07.40, constantly harassed by resident male Mute Swan and departed west 5 mins later
  • Thrybergh CP: Great Crested Grebe - 5 - ad ; Little Grebe - 14 ; Whooper Swan - 4 - ad still present 1020 ; Greylag Goose - 39 - +1 white/brown col. ; Canada Goose - 150 ; Gadwall - 3 - mff ; Shoveler - 3 - fem ; Pochard - 8 ; Tufted Duck - 69 ; Lapwing - 150 ; 319 - 1 ; Herring Gull - 1 - ad ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - Norway ringed bird ; Little Owl - 1 ; Skylark - 7+ - singles flew south ; House Martin - 7 ; Swallow - 1 ; Pied Wagtail - 8 ; Wren - 10 ; Dunnock - 15 ; Robin - 29 ; Song Thrush - 5 - 04-Jan ; Blackbird - 17 ; Chiffchaff - 7 ; Goldcrest - 1 ; Great Tit - 13 ; Blue Tit - 11 ; Chaffinch - 9
  • Walkley garden: Chiffchaff - 1 - Singing, Bentley Road
  • Wisewood: Pink-footed Goose - c70 - over east at 10:20

Sunday 23rd September 2018

  • Agden: Meadow Pipit - 20-30 - Small parties moving through all morning, not half as many as yesterday though.
  • Aldwarke; Liberty Steel: Cormorant - 4 - on pylon by 0810hrs ; Peregrine - 1 - adult, probably roosted on chimney; several unsuccessful hunting forays over site
  • Arbourthorne: Pink-footed Goose - 50+ - flew WNW 10:26.
  • Big Moor: 324 - c56 - Red Deerm Including rutting stags
  • Canklow Woods: Peregrine - 1 - 1 north at 1050
