  • Sharrow: Waxwing - 20 - reported from Cemetery Avenue, off Ecclesall Rd. early afternoon
  • Shillito Wood: Blackbird - 1 ; Blue Tit - 10 ; Brambling - 2 ; Carrion Crow - 3 ; Chaffinch - 4 ; Coal Tit - 8 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2 ; Great Tit - 10 ; Nuthatch - 1 ; Reed Bunting - 1 ; Robin - 1 ; Yellowhammer - 1
  • Weston Park: Wigeon - 1 - female evidently present for another (4th?) winter ; Redwing - 19 ; Mistle Thrush - 4 ; House Sparrow - c.8 ; Common Gull - 1 - adult circling over lake

Monday 7th January 2019

  • Crookes Valley Park: Mute Swan - 2 - first winters with red darvic leg rings (867Y and 873Y): only second record here in 25 years ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - probable adult on lake this morning with BHGs and 2 Herring Gulls.
  • Elsecar Res: Goosander - 4 - 2 pairs
  • Kimberworth: Bullfinch - 1 - Male on seed feeder. Last seen with successfully fledged young at the end of the summer.
  • RVCP, Fishing Lake: Smew - 1 - redhead still present between 09:00 and 10:00
  • Silverwood (pit wood): Brambling - 20+ ; Nuthatch - 4 ; Treecreeper - 2 ; Long-tailed Tit - c100 - In flocks ; Great Tit - 8 ; Blue Tit - 6 ; Chaffinch - 6 - With Brambling. ; Jackdaw - 30 - In flock over wood ; 319 - 1
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Green Sandpiper - 1 - calling bird went up for pool at southern end of lagoon at 07.35
  • Stannington: Waxwing - 25 - On Stannington Rd , flying intermittently to berries next to bus stop @ 10:00 . Then flew off SW ; Waxwing - 22 - On Stannington Road, above Roscoe Mount @ 10:50

Sunday 6th January 2019

  • Arbourthorne: Moorhen - 7 ; Mallard - 8 - 4 pair on pond 08:50 ; Black-headed Gull - 75+ - 25 on pond 50+ on adj playing fields 9am ; Starling - 28 ; Pied Wagtail - 1
  • Banner Cross Hall: Ring-necked Parakeet - 3 - at 11.35
  • City Rd Cemetery: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Jay - 1 ; Mistle Thrush - 1 ; Kestrel - 1 ; Redwing - 100+ - moblie flock in trees and feeding in leaf litter 09 :30- 10:00.
  • Common Lane: Brambling - 6 - Still 6 brambling visiting the garden each day (for last two weeks)
  • Ewden Valley: Willow Tit - 1 - in dense growth of young trees along north side of Yewtrees Lane.
  • Fox Hole Carr: Brambling - 100+ - seen from gate and mobile. ; Raven - 2 ; Common Buzzard - 2
  • Green Moor: Tawny Owl - 1
  • Hangingwater Road: Brambling - 2 - Feeding on allotments
  • High Stubbin: Pheasant - 2 - completely (off-)white, leucistic/albinistic bird (too distant to be sure). Presumably f as m in attendance.
  • Hillsborough: Blackcap - 1 - male bathing in garden birdbath
  • Holmesfield: Kestrel - 1
  • Hurlfield: Tawny Owl - 1 - Calling at 16:55 in Sycamore tree.
  • Langsett Res: Black-headed Gull - 4100+ - roosted ; Common Gull - c100 ; Great Black-backed Gull - 12 ; Herring Gull - 5 - briefly
  • Lodge Moor: Brambling - 2 - 2 males regular daily visitors at sunflower hearts feeder
  • Longley Park: Ring-necked Parakeet - 6 - Daily visitors from 2017. Up to 10 seen in garden on feeders.
  • Loxley: Brambling - 6+ - 6+ in edge of road between the two garden centres. Also one at Damflask.
  • Middleton Moor: 320 - 13 ; Goosander - 1 - a male ; Lapwing - 3 ; 320 - 8 ; Red-legged Partridge - 12 ; Fieldfare - 3
  • Nether Haugh: Song Thrush - 1 - singing
  • New Stubbin; Back Lane: Brambling - 1+ - calling (heard only) ; Red-legged Partridge - 9 - covey ; Redwing - 7 - left W ; Fieldfare - 5 - left W ; Black-headed Gull - 17 ; Greenfinch - 1 - W ; Herring Gull - 2
  • Northern General Hospital: Ring-necked Parakeet - 2
  • Oughtibridge garden: Brambling - 4
  • Peat Pits: Golden Plover - 200+ - roosting in field off Bolsterstone Road
  • Pit-house West: BITTERN - 1 - Flew across Bittern Pool 1630hr ; Water Rail - 3+
  • R Don, Newhall Rd: Kingfisher - 1 - More than likely one of last years juveniles. ; Kingfisher - 1 - Single female on river bank ; Goosander - 1 - Single female heading upstream. Record shot i/c kingfisher.
  • R Don, Oughtibridge: Goosander - 4 - 2 M + 2 F by Oughtibridge War Memorial Sports Club.
  • R Don,Sanderson Weir: Grey Heron - 1 - Flew in and settled at weir top.
  • Redmires: 324 - 1 - Water Vole droppings and slow-moving but active Common Frog, both in ditch.
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Cormorant - 1 - Flying in over Soughley Lane to bottom res early afternoon
  • Redmires conduit: Kestrel - 1 - very confiding, landing and staying in a small tree ; Red Grouse - 4 ; Coal Tit - 1 ; 324 - 1 - Water Vole, showing well briefly ; Golden Plover - 2 - Two birds flying fast and low
  • Redmires Res: Lapwing - c60 - on muddy shore ; Mallard - c30
