  • Bassingthorpe Farm: Kestrel - 1 - hunting low over fields and hedge adjacent to mobile mast
  • Brecks, Rotherham: Raven - 1 - calling, flying SW very high at 12.05
  • Canklow Woods: Raven - 1 - 1 cronking south at 1120
  • Crowhole: 319 - 1 ; Swallow - up to 10
  • Ecclesfield: Grey Heron - 2 - Circling high over Cross Hill,, mobbed by Herring Gull. ; Swift - 6 - High Street
  • Great Longstone: Peregrine - 2 - Circling over village, calling
  • Kimberworth Park: Magpie - 5 - Adult and 4 juvs, Duke Crescent ; Greenfinch - 1 - singing, Roughwood School
  • Orgreave Lakes: Black-tailed Godwit - 3 - Dropped in at 06:40 ; Common Sandpiper - 1
  • Thrybergh CP: Lapwing - c. 40 - noisy flock on bank-side
  • Wadsley Common: 324 - 2 - Male and female Roe Deer in field to west of Aldene Ave.
  • Wadsley Common garden: House Sparrow - 7 - Including 3 juveniles.
  • Walkley garden: Swift - 3 - visit to former nest site(occupied by house sparrows during summer for 3 years)

Tuesday 25th July 2023

  • Attercliffe: Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - juv (new), 2cy, and adult. Adult showing leg injury very similar to bird in previous years here.
  • Howden Res: Canada Goose - 163 - including 4+ well-grown broods ; Cormorant - 4 - all adults ; Mallard - 40 - including young broods of 5 and 8 chicks ; Greylag Goose - 4 - 2 adults and 2 full-grown young ; 319 - 2 - over W arm; much calling ; Nuthatch - 1 - At Tin Town
  • King Tree: Crossbill - 10+ - Two parties moved over/ through the trees by the turning circle; at least 10 in total
  • R Don, Brightside: Little Egret - 1 - flew downstream over Hawke Street ; Sand Martin - 5 - inc adults feeding two nests in drainage pipes Newhall Road, both with 3 juvs in entrance holes. ; Kingfisher - 1 - Newhall Road stretch
  • R Don, Lady*s Bridge - Washford Bridge: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - Juvenile on weir ; Dipper - 1 ; Goldcrest - 2 - 1 singing ; Common Sandpiper - 1 - Flew downstream over weir ; Kingfisher - 1 - Heard only ; Sand Martin - 12+ - 6 nest holes in Attercliffe Rd rail bridge - adults attending; 4 juvs at entrances.

  • Redmires Res: Tufted Duck - 4 - 2 m + female with well-grown chick on Middle Res ; Mallard - 20 - c. ; Greylag Goose - 25 - c. ; Curlew - 1 - 3 juvs in fields ; Oystercatcher - 1 - in fields ; Common Sandpiper - 1 - on Middle Res ; Lapwing - 10 - c. ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 12 ; Herring Gull - 2 - on gantry ; Black-headed Gull - 4 ; Swift - 5 - over Top Res dam wall ; Swallow - 20 - c. ; Whinchat - 1 - ad male on wires by Bottom Res - new arrival ; Whitethroat - 6 - inc juvs from two different breeding pairs ; Crossbill - 1 - by Top Res ; Yellow Wagtail - 1 - flew W over Bottom Res - first of the autumn which looked to be a juv as it flew past ; Kestrel - 3 - imms ; Common Buzzard - 2 - recently fledged juvs calling from Redmires Plantation ; Peregrine - 1 - juv male - tangled with local Kestrel before continuing W ; Spotted Flycatcher - 1 - calling by Top Res
  • RVCP: Wigeon - 1 - first returning bird ; Black-headed Gull - 1 - colour ringed bird returned for its 2nd winter. Ringed as an adult type near Oslo in April 2020
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Green Woodpecker - 1 - calling in The Close at 08.10 ; Grey Partridge - 1 ; Great Crested Grebe - 2 - long-staying pair. No breeding attempt, but still displaying occasionally ; Little Grebe - 12+ - adults and juvs, including pair feeding second brood ; Reed Warbler - 8+ - still a couple singing, others calling in phragmites. 2-3 pairs bred ; Kestrel - 1 ; Common Buzzard - 2 ; Song Thrush - 2 - singing ; Yellowhammer - 1 ; Willow Warbler - 1 - singing ; Chiffchaff - 2 - singing
  • Thrybergh CP: Little Owl - 1 - Calling on southern boundary ; Mute Swan - 31 ; Grey Heron - 2 ; Lapwing - c40 ; Common Tern - 3 ; Grey Wagtail - 1 ; Pied Wagtail - 8+ ; Goldcrest - 3+ ; Reed Warbler - 8+ ; Whitethroat - 6 ; Swift - 20 ; Swallow - 10 ; Sand Martin - 10+ ; House Martin - 1 ; Kestrel - 1 M ; Reed Bunting - 1 ; Bullfinch - 4 ; Linnet - 4

  • Attercliffe: Lesser Black-backed Gull - c60 - inc striking small, dark mantled advanced 3cy bird certainly a 'L.f.fuscus' candidate, Warren Street
  • Barbrook Valley: Stonechat - 10+ - Two separate family parties with several fledged young between Barbrook Cottage and Barbrook Plantation
  • Barlow: Swift - 2
