  • Redmires Bottom Res: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 57 - Roosted ; Greylag Goose - 16 - Dropped onto res at dusk
  • Stanage End: 337 - 1 - Drifting and circling below and along edge at c.09:15 ; Wheatear - 7 - Adults plus different age juveniles.
  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Nightjar - 1+ - at least one bird calling in flight ; Woodcock - 2 - One roding, another flushed from below wharncliffe crags
  • Wharncliffe Woods: Redstart - 1

Wednesday 22nd July 2020

  • Bamford Edge: Cuckoo - 1 - Recently fledged bird - calling avidly
  • Derwent Moors: 337 - 1 - 1/2 ml east of Ladybower Res - flew SE over Whinstone Lee Tor at 16:34
  • Greystones: Swift - 10 - Over
  • Ladybower Inn: 337 - 1 - Soaring over woods behind Ladybower Inn 09:00.
  • R Don, Effingham St: Lesser Black-backed Gull - c50 - including the first 2 fresh looking juvs (6 days later than last year), and a new Norwegian colour ringed 2cy intermedius.
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Greenfinch - 1 - male, bathing
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Cormorant - 1 ; Ringed Plover - 2 - Same pair preent for a while ; Little Ringed Plover - 1 - juvenile ; Dunlin - 2 - adults
  • Sheephill Road: 319 - 2
  • Slippery Stones: 337 - 1 - dropping bones, feeding around Cranberry Clough low down over moor at 13:00
  • Wadsley: Swift - 9
  • Walkley garden: Swift - 20+ - Circling over. Single adult at local cavity actively removing nest material at 9.00am.
  • Wharncliffe Side: Wren - 1+ - nest in observers garden

Tuesday 21st July 2020

  • Agden Side: Willow Tit - 1 - 1 Willow tit juvenile caught and ringed.
  • Bamford Moor: 337 - 1 - Over Bamford Moor and Stanage End 10.00-10.55, resting on rocks below Stanage End for 5-10 minutes on two occasions, attracting the ire of the local corvids. After a close fly-past near A57, circled higher and eventually disappeared NW over Whinstone Lee Tor. ; Raven - 12 - All mobbing Lammergeier mid-morning ; 319 - 2 - Mobbing Lammergeier mid-morning
  • Brownhills Lane: Swallow - 9
  • Cutthroat Bridge: 337 - 1 - flew over A57 at Cutthroat Bridge 1.5mls east of Ladybower Res at 09:55 and again at 10:21.
  • Derwent Moors: 337 - 1 - at 14:56 over ridge south of Dovestone Tor
  • Dog Kennel Pond: Common Tern - 2 ; Sedge Warbler - 1 - singing from W end
  • Kimberworth: Bullfinch - 2 - Male and female on garden sunflower hearts feeder.
  • Lodge Moor: Peregrine - 1 - Ad male took Woodpigeon from fields and off NE ; Whitethroat - 3 - pairs all with fledged young
  • Moscar: Hobby - 1 - Failed attempt to take Swallow, just N of A57/ Strines junction
  • Moscar Moor: Stock Dove - 4 ; 337 - 1 - Showed well for just over an hour from 09:55, ranging between Crows Chin, Cutthroat Bridge and Bamford Moor before eventually heading NW up Derwent Valley. Mobbed variously by a party of 12 Ravens, 2 Buzzards and 3 Kestrels
  • Norfolk Park: Peregrine - 1 - Adult circling overhead, perhaps hunting pigeons.
  • R Don, Effingham St: Canada Goose - 0 - abandoned nest with one egg still there.
  • R Don, Norfolk Bridge: Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - adult and 2x 3cy on roof at Warren Street ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - c40 - inc a new Stavanger, Norway ringed 2cy. Also 2 green ringed Bowland fledged 2cy birds around recently.
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Goldfinch - 12 - max together
  • Redmires: Black-headed Gull - 7 ; Curlew - 1 ; Meadow Pipit - 1 ; Kestrel - 2 ; Wheatear - 3
  • Redmires Res: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 100 - c. ; Black-headed Gull - 50 - c. ; Ringed Plover - 2 ; Dunlin - 2 - ads in summer plumage ; Crossbill - 4 - Flew W
  • Sheffield Centre: Swift - 3 - 1+ 2 ; Goldfinch - 1
  • Stanage End: Hobby - 1 - Interacting with Kestrel. ; Raven - 16 - Separate groups of nine and five flying plus two on ground.
  • Stubley Hollow: Jackdaw - 91 ; Chiffchaff - 3 ; Blackcap - 2 ; Swallow - 10
  • Wadsley: Sparrowhawk - 1 - Female, high, soaring ignoring and ignored by the feeding swifts it was flying through. ; Swift - 5
  • Wentworth Park: Little Owl - 1 - On branch of old Ash tree, E of Roman Ridge ; 319 - 1 - Drifted from N end of park carrying prey - rodent/squirrel. Circled over Morley Plantations.

Monday 20th July 2020

  • Abbey Brook: 337 - 1 - Spent night at the usual roost site in Abbey Brook, leaving at 05:37, and was still in that area until 06:30 when it drifted south, being seen at Cutthroat Bridge just after 9am.
  • Attercliffe: Peregrine - 1 - ad sheltering from rain on Bernard Road incinerator building, my first here for several months.
  • Calver: 319 - 1 ; Swift - 1
  • Cutthroat Bridge: 337 - 1 - 1.5mls east of Ladybower Res still 1250hrs flew NW over A57 at Cutthroat Bridge
  • Fulwood: Stock Dove - 1 - Adult under feeders this morning - unusual garden visitor here
  • Greystones: Swift - 3 - Observer's garden
  • Grindleford: Swift - 2
  • Magna, Templeborough: Peregrine - 1 - Juvenile on roof. Unsuccessfully attacked a male Kestrel then lost a staring contest with an audacious Feral Pigeon that flew in and sat near it for several minutes; the Peregrine blinked first and flew off!
  • Margery Hill: Cuckoo - 1
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Common Buzzard - 4 - soaring over calling, 1243-1250hrs; lots of aerial interaction - family party? ; Chaffinch - 1 - female
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Dunlin - 1 ; Ringed Plover - 2 ; Little Ringed Plover - 1 ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Greenshank - 1 ; Common Gull - 1 - Adult present among BHGs but left W late evening ; Black-headed Gull - 65 - Roost ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 25 - Roost ; Herring Gull - 1 - Roost ; Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - An adult and 2x 3cy ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Swift - 16 - Hawking abundant supply of midges along dam wall
  • Redmires conduit: Redstart - 1 - juvenile on conduit wall
  • Redmires Res: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 90 - c. ; Yellow-legged Gull - 3 - ads ; Ringed Plover - 2 ; Little Ringed Plover - 1 ; Crossbill - 6 - high to the S
  • Slippery Stones: Stonechat - 3 - 3 juvs
  • Totley: House Martin - 2 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 heard

  • Whiston: Peregrine - 2 - circling overhead and calling
  • Agden Rocher: Stonechat - 4 - all juvs, Rocher End ; 324 - 2 - Dark Green Fritillaries
