  • Broomhead/Rushy Wood: Siskin - 11 - small flock very noisy in top of conifers ; Crossbill - 2 - Male and female in top of larch in full sun
  • Catcliffe Flash: Mute Swan - 6 - ad pr + 4 imm ; Gadwall - 5+ ; 320 - 30+ ; Shoveler - 1 - male ; Pochard - 3 ; Tufted Duck - 12 ; Goosander - 1 - flew east ; Cormorant - 1 ; Coot - 20+ ; Black-headed Gull - c130 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1
  • Crosspool: Waxwing - 5 - Manchester Road
  • Ecclesall Woods: Siskin - c20 - In alders past Ryecroft Mill and Ryecroft Glen ; Bullfinch - 3 ; Nuthatch - 1
  • Five Weirs Walk: Dipper - 2 - below Sanderson's Weir. One bird flew off downstream, last seen at Stevenson Road, one(singing bird) remained. ; Goosander - 9 - 5 males flew high upstream at Sanderson's Weir, a pair below Salmon Pastures & another pair at Wicker Arches ; Jay - 2 - below Sanderson's Weir - unusual here
  • Gleadless Townend: Waxwing - 30-40 - Berry bushes along White Lane at 12:50 - very flighty.
  • Manor Oaks Farm: Waxwing - 13+ - in tree outside farmhouse offices at 09:00. Flew off east.
  • Meersbrook: Goldfinch - 15+ - In top branches of tall ornamental plum, Lismore Rd
  • Millhouses Park: 319 - 1 - On ground ; Redwing - 1 ; Goldcrest - 2 - pair
  • Norwood Allotments: Waxwing - 1 - Single bird circled the site at 08:30 and left North. ; 319 - 1 - Over low southeast at 8:35
  • Orgreave Lakes: Pink-footed Goose - 1 - With small flock of greylags. ; Goldeneye - 3 - Male, 2 females.

Tuesday 24th January 2017

  • Canklow Woods: Lesser Redpoll - 38 - mobile flock of 38
  • Crookes: Waxwing - 3 - 1st winters perched in trees in the grounds of St. Thomas' Church (Crookes Road/Nairn Street) and hawthorns in back gardens on Elgin Street (viewable from church grounds/Nairn Street). 15.50-16.00. ; Song Thrush - 1 - singing near junction of Howard Road/Heavygate Road
  • Crosspool: Waxwing - 90 - In perching tree on Manchester Rd at 08:30 ; Waxwing - 42 - Around Manchester Road for 10 mins at 14:50, trying to get down to the last of the berries but mostly denied by territorial Mistle Thrush
  • Dungworth: Waxwing - 30 - In trees between junior school and the main road.
  • Ecclesall Woods: Sparrowhawk - 1 - imm female, wood 2. ; Goldcrest - 4 - 1, 1, 2 ; Treecreeper - 1 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1
  • Hathersage: Mandarin - 25 - on the Derwent north of Leadmill, a few males displaying ; Goosander - 2 - a pair near Leadmill ; Redwing - 30+ - in trees near Offerton Hall with a few Fieldfare
  • Lodge Moor: Fieldfare - 40 - Fields north of Brown Hills Lane.
  • Manchester Rd, Crosspool: Waxwing - 95 - On the usual trees close to 602 Manchester Rd. Last of the berries, may be last chance to observe here!
  • Meersbrook Park: Redwing - 42+ - Feeding in grassland at top of Park ; Grey Wagtail - 1
  • Nether Green: Waxwing - 50 - 100 - Flock of 50 - 100 wheeling around above junction of Fulwood and Nether Green roads at 12:45
  • Orgreave Lakes: Goldeneye - 3 - 1 male,2 females ; Wigeon - 120+ - On tip. ; Grey Partridge - 4 ; Jay - 1 ; Song Thrush - 1 ; Cormorant - 10
  • Rotherham Centre: Cormorant - 1 - SW @ 0807hrs ; Goosander - 1pr - SW @ 1024hrs (same pair as seen heading N earlier?)
  • Rotherham Centre; Don Canal, Brown*s Cut: Kingfisher - 1 - flew along canal towards river @ 1225hrs
  • Sheffield Centre: Goldfinch - 14 - Small flock in car park near Barkers Pool
  • Shillito Wood: Yellowhammer - 2 - pair in car park on feeding stones. ; Brambling - 6 - 2 females and 4 males ; Reed Bunting - 1 - male
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Pochard - 2 ; Gadwall - 2 ; Coot - c20 ; Mute Swan - 1pr ; Black-headed Gull - 90 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - adult with Blk-h Gulls ; Cormorant - 1 - 'down' briefly then north ; Stock Dove - 1 ; Grey Partridge - 1 ; Short-eared Owl - 1 ; Jay - 2 ; Skylark - 8 - including 2 singing ; Rook - 70 - in stubble to west ; Yellowhammer - 4 ; 319 - 2 ; Kestrel - 2 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 ; Goldfinch - c50 ; Reed Bunting - 8 ; Meadow Pipit - 15
