  • Roper Hill: Kestrel - 1 - Hovering
  • Rother Valley CP: Little Egret - 1 - Flew across Nature Reserve lake ; Egyptian Goose - Pair - On grassland close to river. ; Smew - 1 - Redhead on Fishing Lake and then on small lake.
  • Silver Wood: Pink-footed Goose - 10+ - Heard, west at 10.10 ; Green Woodpecker - 1 - 'yaffling' in lower woods ; Nuthatch - 2 ; Fieldfare - 25 ; Redwing - 3 - with F/F in hawthorns to west of woods ; Greenfinch - 7 - party over small playing field to south of woods

  • Canklow Woods: Song Thrush - 1 - 1 singing
  • Freebirch: Fieldfare - 220+ - In stubble field on western side of Slatepit Lane
  • Handsworth garden: Goldcrest - 1 ; Long-tailed Tit - 16
  • Hillsborough Park: Mute Swan - 2
  • Howden Res: PARROT CROSSBILL - 2 - ad m&f with 17 Common Crossbill in usual spot from 12:15-12:30 before flying south
  • Kimberworth: Blackcap - 2 - 2 females on garden fatball feeder. ; Goldcrest - 1 - with 3 blue tits
  • Ladybower: Treecreeper - 1
  • Owlerton: Cormorant - 1 - high south over the Don
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Great Black-backed Gull - c200 ; Herring Gull - c100 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - 2w ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w in with flock of 300 big Gulls loafing on waste ground 13:00.
  • Silver Wood: Fieldfare - 25 - in hawthorns to west of woods ; Yellowhammer - 9 - in field bordering footpath from woods to Old Ravenfield. A good count here nowadays.
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Tufted Duck - 75 - site record ; Pochard - 4 ; Gadwall - 11 ; 320 - 2 ; Common Gull - 1 ; Black-headed Gull - 30 ; Kestrel - 1

Wednesday 3rd January 2018

  • Dore garden: Siskin - 20 - about 20 on feeder and in conifer
  • Ibbotson Wheel Dam: 320 - 3 - 1m + 2f
  • Meersbrook Park: Pied Wagtail - 2
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; adjacent interchange: Grey Wagtail - 2 - presumed both males; lots of chasing, excited calling/brief song @ 0750hrs ; Goldcrest - 02-Mar - calling from riverside scrub @ 0750hrs
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Great Black-backed Gull - 213 - including Orange (North Thames) and Black (South Norway - ringed as a chick at Vest-Agder in southern Norway in 2012) colour ringed birds. ; Herring Gull - 89 - loafing and bathing in pools on waste ground.
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Fieldfare - c.50 ; Redwing - 7 ; Siskin - 1 ; Grey Heron - 1 - east ; Pochard - 4 ; 319 - 2
  • Thrybergh Tip: Shoveler - 2prs
