  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w again, circled up high and headed W at 13:40.
  • Redmires Res: Lapwing - 21 - over Middle Res ; Golden Plover - 1 - over Middle Res with Lapwings - scarce here in January
  • Tapton: Tawny Owl - 2 - male and female calling at 23:00 in garden at Taptonville new houses
  • Woodhouse Washlands: Snipe - 50 ; Jack Snipe - 2 ; Stonechat - 1 - Male ; Kestrel - 2 - A pair ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - female

Wednesday 24th January 2018

  • Bingham Park: Kingfisher - 1 - Male on lower pond ; Dipper - 1 - Silver ring on right leg. In river adj to lower pond.
  • Crookes: Waxwing - 3 - 1st winters perched in trees in the grounds of St. Thomas' Church (Crookes Road/Nairn Street) and hawthorns in back gardens on Elgin Street (viewable from church grounds/Nairn Street) ; Song Thrush - 1 - singing near junction of Howard Road/Heavygate Road
  • Dronfield: Dipper - 1 - in Lea Brook Valley, Dronfield, with a grey wagtail behind the Oaks Community Church. A first on this site for me.
  • Endcliffe Park: Kingfisher - 1 - Male, flew downstream from lower pond ; Black-headed Gull - 40+ - On recreation ground ; Mandarin - 2 - Male & Female on lower pond ; Grey Wagtail - 1
  • Forge Dam: 320 - 4 - 2 males 2 females
  • Hangingwater garden: Siskin - 4 - 2m + 2f on seed feeders
  • Hillsborough Park: Goosander - 1
  • Howden Res: PARROT CROSSBILL - 10+ - Minimum of 10 mid day, usual spot above Howden Res. Finally, very confiding in tree by puddle and coming down to bathe. Common Crossbill also
  • Manor Fields Park: Mallard - 6 - 3 pair on pond. ; Moorhen - 5 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 ; Blackbird - 20 - at least, around site. ; Redwing - 160 - large flock at least 160 feeding on grass areas. ; Mistle Thrush - 1 ; Song Thrush - 3 ; Goldfinch - 18 - in silver birch trees. ; House Sparrow - 12 ; Pied Wagtail - 1 - near car park.
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; adjacent interchange: Song Thrush - 1 - in full song @ 0750hrs
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Great Black-backed Gull - 110 - inc 3 colour ringed birds, 1w, 3w and ad, 2 ringed as chicks in Norway, one from Denmark. ; Herring Gull - 83 - including bird ringed Hornoya island (Vardo, Finnmark, Norway) as a chick in 2010 ; 321 - 1 - on waste ground with Gull flock ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 - ad
  • Rawmarsh:New Stubbin: Little Owl - 1 - calling @ 19.15
  • Rotherham Centre; All Saints* churchyard: Goldfinch - 200+ - Noisy pre-roost gathering @ 1610hrs
  • Tapton: Tawny Owl - 2 - Pair calling in the oak trees at Taylor Wimpey houses, Taptonville Rd

  • 70 Acre Hill: Jay - 1 - Bottom pond ; Moorhen - 1 - male, bottom pond.
  • Attercliffe: Peregrine - 2 - adult pair, both shot off in a failed pursuit of a passing Feral Pigeon.
  • Blackburn Meadows NR: Cormorant - 5 - On the canal between Holmes and Jordans locks ; Goosander - 6 - On canal
  • Crookes: Waxwing - 3 - at top of School Road this morning ; Waxwing - 3 - sat on top of tree opposite number 340 School Rd, Crookes ; Waxwing - 3 - Same spot at 10.45
  • Europa Link: Long-tailed Tit - 08-Oct - Feeding group. ; Bullfinch - 1 - Male ; Robin - 1 - Singing.
  • Hillsborough Park: Goosander - 2 - 2 males ; Tufted Duck - 3 - 3 males ; Grey Heron - 2 ; Mute Swan - 2 ; Black-headed Gull - 200+ ; Collared Dove - 70+ - roost
  • Howden Res: PARROT CROSSBILL - 2+ - At least 2 with a flock of 20+ Common Crossbills at 12.35
  • Meersbrook Park: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - Heard drumming ; Redwing - 40+
  • Peat Pits: Golden Plover - 250
  • R Don, Effingham St: Goosander - 2 - pair above weir
  • Rawmarsh:Haugh Rd: Cormorant - 1 - N @ 16.00 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - fem ; 319 - 4 - circling @ 15.45 ; Kestrel - 2 ; Merlin - 1 - ad fem low to W over playing field @ 15.32 ; Herring Gull - 6 - S ; Great Black-backed Gull - 4 - S
