  • Padley Gorge: Wood Warbler - 1 - singing ; Pied Flycatcher - 1 - Male briefly at woodland edge ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2+ - 2 adults - 1 at nesting hole and 1 calling nearby. Young also heard calling from nest. ; Willow Warbler - 2+ - singing ; Grey Wagtail - 1
  • R Don, Effingham St: Yellow-legged Gull - 1 - near adult ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - c60 ; Herring Gull - c15
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Kingfisher - 1
  • Ramsley Moor: Cuckoo - 2 - Pair in flight chased by meadow pipits ; Little Owl - 2 - Pair with one carrying food
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Oystercatcher - 5 - At least 4 adults, plus a young chick ; Yellow Wagtail - 2 ; Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - reeling
  • Woodhouse Washlands: Kingfisher - 1 - Flew downstream. ; Reed Warbler - 1 - Singing on the fishing pond ; Lapwing - 1 - in the conservation area

  • Abbey Brook: Ring Ouzel - 2 - pair alarm calling and singing at junction of Bents Clough and Abbey Brook
  • Broomhall Hall: Redstart - 1 - singing by Mortimer Road ; Woodcock - 1+ - roding
  • Burbage Valley: Ring Ouzel - 1 - Singing male ; Woodcock - 4+ - Single birds roding, two presumably male birds clashing, and a pair flying together amicably.
  • Canklow Woods: Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - reeling 2130 ; Woodcock - 1 - roding at 2130
  • Coppice Wood: Redstart - 2 - 2 singing males ; Dipper - 1+ - adult and a fledged juv on River Derwent.
  • Dronfield: Grey Wagtail - 2 - Confirmed breeding under sloping wooden walkway at train station.
  • Ewden Beck: Woodcock - 1 - roding ; Ring Ouzel - 2 - pair by the shooting Cabin (alarm calling and singing)
  • Garlic House Farm (Ewden): Snipe - 1 - drumming over field to the west of the farm buildings
  • Harper Lees: Dipper - 1+ - adult feeding fledged juv. ; Wren - 1
  • Heeley Retail Park: Swift - 6 - High over
  • Jaunty Park: Swift - 10 - over playing field 16:45. ; Mistle Thrush - 2 - on playing field ; Whitethroat - 1 ; Blackcap - 1
  • Kettle Wood: Green Woodpecker - 1 ; Blackbird - 1 ; Blue Tit - 1 - taking food into nest site in wall ; Robin - 1
  • Kimberworth Park: Swift - 2 - 1pr, 1 entering n @ Roughwood Road
  • Langley Brook (south of Underbank Reservoir): Golden Plover - 1 - heard calling at night (presumably a male feeding away from breeding site)
  • Lodge Moor: Siskin - 6 - Male and female plus 4 juvenile on sunflower feeder
  • Meersbrook Park: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - Heard ; Song Thrush - 1 - Heard
  • Middlewood: Swift - 20+ - 6 active nests on Ganton Road/Rockley Road ; House Martin - 10+ - Birds checking out eaves at 4 separate properties on Rockley Road.
  • Orgreave Lakes: Cuckoo - 1 - driven off from SW corner of large lake by lapwings at 0810. Left SW, (record shot).
  • Overstones Farm: Lapwing - 1 ; Curlew - 2 - Less than previous count, one preening on wall ; Swallow - 1 - Hawking low over field & adjacent moors ; Meadow Pipit - 2 - On & around wall
  • Redmires: Woodcock - 1
  • Redmires Middle Res: Curlew - 5 - Three taking a bath in the reservoir ; Swallow - 2 ; House Martin - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 2 - Pair. Female collecting nesting material ; Ringed Plover - 2 ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Common Sandpiper - 1 - Feeding along reservoir wall near Oystercatchers
  • Rough Wood: Blue Tit - 1 ; Stock Dove - 1
  • Silver Wood: Reed Warbler - 1 - singing in bullrushes and iris beds on Woodlaithes duckpond - never had one here before ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2 ; Sparrowhawk - 2
  • Southey Green: House Martin - 4 - on corner of Halliwell Rd+Avisford Rd . 11am searching for potenial nestsites. ?
  • Wadsley Common garden: Wren - 1 - Carrying faecal sac.
  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Pied Flycatcher - 4+ - 3 occupied nest boxes with females seen entering, 1 male briefly visited a box, 1 bird heard singing out of sight

Wednesday 30th May 2018

  • Beauchief: Brambling - 1 - male, unusually late for the species
  • Catcliffe Flash: Mallard - 1+ - fem + 5 chicks ; Gadwall - 3+ ; Great Crested Grebe - 2 - a pair with nest ; Coot - 12+ - inc 2 sitting, no young yet ; Swift - 6+ ; Sand Martin - 6+ ; House Martin - 4+ ; Grey Heron - 1 ; Blue Tit - 1 - collecting food ; Blackcap - 1 - singing
  • Hangingwater garden: Nuthatch - 1 - flying from feeder with food ; Swift - 3 - circling but ignoring nest boxes and recorded sounds!
  • Hangingwater Road: Swift - 10 - gathering to feed over allotments
  • Heeley, Chesterfield Road: Goldfinch - 2 has
  • Kimberworth: Woodpigeon - 2 - Bathing by sitting on the fence in the rain. Lifting alternate wings to let the rain run through.
  • Norton Lees: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - Flew across Norton Lees Lane
  • Parkgate: Swift - c30 - feeding over @ 1630hrs
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre; adjacent interchange: Grey Wagtail - breeding confirmed - male feeding 2 fledged juvs
  • Redmires Bottom Res: Canada Goose - 2 - ads + 4 well-grown young ; Spotted Flycatcher - 1 - singing ; Lesser Redpoll - 1 - calling
  • Redmires Middle Res: Oystercatcher - 2 - ads with young ; Lapwing - 2 ; Ringed Plover - 1 - dark ad tundrae ; Dunlin - 1 - ad - displaying ; Sanderling - 1 - ad still present ; Curlew - 2 ; Whitethroat - 1 - male still singing ; Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - reeling
