  • Middleton Moor: Shelduck - 2 - Pair ; Oystercatcher - 2 ; Dunlin - 1 ; Reed Warbler - 2 - Singing
  • Padley Gorge: Treecreeper - 2 - Together ; Pied Flycatcher - 3 - M&F seen together ; Cuckoo - 1 ; Jay - 1 ; Great Tit - 2 - Carrying food into nest box ; Blue Tit - 2 - Entering nest box ; Song Thrush - 1 - Singing
  • R Don, Blackburn Meadows: Little Egret - 1 - feeding downstream side of weir by Jordans lock at 12:20. Still there at 15:30
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Great Crested Grebe - 3 ; House Martin - c.25 - mostly feeding low over lagoon ; Swift - 10 - with HM

Tuesday 24th May 2022

  • Blackburn Meadows NR: Little Egret - 1 - Flew over west at 11.40
  • Chatsworth Park: House Martin - 2+ - Visiting probable nest site beneath Paynes Bridge
  • Dore: Dunnock - 1+ - an adult feeding one newly fledged young in observer’s garden
  • Ecclesfield Park: Grey Wagtail - 2 - Pair on stream adj.to "Germanic Mount".
  • Green Moor: Tree Sparrow - 5+ - Fledglings - at least three being fed ; House Sparrow - 10+ - At least two family groups ; Green Woodpecker - 1
  • Greystones: House Sparrow - 8 - 1 Juvenile, 1st of the year in observer's garden
  • High Green: Swift - 10+ - Much courtship display flights plus visiting nest sites at Burncross Cemetry and Wharncliffe pub.
  • Langsett Res: Oystercatcher - 3 - Believed to be 2 pairs nesting
  • Midhope Res: Oystercatcher - 4 - 2 adult with two fledglings. ; Willow Warbler - 3 - singing ; House Martin - 8 ; Swift - Pair - Courtship flights ; Greylag Goose - 87 - 68 adult, 19 goslings ; Little Grebe - 1 ; Chiffchaff - 1 ; Swallow - 4 ; Meadow Pipit - 3 - 2 carrying food to nest ; Curlew - 2 ; Kestrel - 1 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 4 - Single sub-adults west ; Siskin - 2 ; Pied Wagtail - 1 - Food carrying to nest ; Tufted Duck - 5 ; Common Sandpiper - 1 ; 321 - 2
  • Millhouses: Swift - 3 - Screaming pair and one other. Maximum count so far this month. ; Blue Tit - 5 - Five successfully fledged from garden nest box but from a clutch of only five eggs

  • Silverwood Lagoon: Little Grebe - 6+ - pair now feeding young, at least two other pairs also present ; Mute Swan - 2+ - pair and 9 cygnets (not 8 as originally counted)
  • Underbank Res: Whooper Swan - 1 - Western neck ; Grey Heron - 3 ; Grey Wagtail - 2 - nesting.pair ; Common Sandpiper - 1 ; Great Crested Grebe - 1
  • White Lee Moor (west of): Barn Owl - 1 ; Cuckoo - 1 - Calling ; Woodcock - 1 - Roding

  • Fairholmes: Wood Warbler - 1 - singing in Beeches by bus stop
  • Howden Res: Goosander - 1 - drake ; 320 - 3 - 2m, 1f
  • Jack Flat: Wood Warbler - 2 - Singing male plus another bird calling whilst feeding ; Pied Flycatcher - 1 - Male, singing and visiting nest hole ; Cuckoo - 1 - Heard towards Gardoms Edge
  • Kimberworth Park: Sparrowhawk - 1 - circling low over Roughwood School/ Crane Road
  • Leash Fen: Lapwing - 4
  • Neepsend: Blue Tit - 2 - Active nest in wall of workshop on Neepsend Lane by River Don. ; Sand Martin - 8 ; Pied Wagtail - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 2 - Pair River Don
  • Nether Hey: Hobby - 1 - flew over
  • Pebley Pond: Common Sandpiper - 1
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Sand Martin - 25+ - Stevenson Rd/Hecla Rd. ; Grey Wagtail - 2 - Pair ; Blue Tit - 2 - Pair ; Chiffchaff - 1
  • Redmires Res: Curlew - 8 - in fields ; Oystercatcher - 5 - 2 ads with 3 newly hatched young on Middle Res ; Common Sandpiper - 2 - on Middle Res
  • Upper Common, Scholes: Skylark - 1+ - singing over wheat crop
  • Upper Derwentdale: Redstart - 2 - singing males in Larches above Kings Tree ; Spotted Flycatcher - 2 - in Larches above Kings Tree, 2 territories assumed. ; Tree Pipit - 1 - singing
  • Upper Hey: Whinchat - c3 - singing males, definitely 2 probably 3
  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Pied Flycatcher - 10+ - 5 pairs in nest boxes
  • Wire Mill Dam: Tufted Duck - 2 - Pair on dam at 21:15
