  • Wharncliffe Heath NR: Lesser Redpoll - 1 ; Bullfinch - 2 - pair ; Redwing - 10 ; Nuthatch - 1 ; Jay - 2 ; Magpie - 1 ; Cormorant - 1 - over reserve
  • Wire Mill Dam: Mandarin - 16 male, 12 female ; Goosander - 3 - 1m,2f. ; Mandarin - 28 - Doing lots of mating displays, bobbing & calling.

Thursday 16th January 2020

  • Blackburn Meadows NR: Peregrine - 1 - Hunting over the reserve. ; Water Rail - 1+
  • Brightside Lane, S9: Ring-necked Parakeet - 25 - at roost.
  • Cross Hill, Ecclesfield: Sparrowhawk - 1 - Male perched in tree to rear of no.86 2.50-3.07,then flew over no.89.
  • Crowhole: Chiffchaff - 4 - overwintering; at one point all in same bins shot, so definitely not over-counted ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2 - two males doing territorial display to each other ; Goldcrest - 2 ; Pied Wagtail - 3 ; Long-tailed Tit - up to 10 ; Moorhen - 16 - including 15 on one small filter bed at the sewage works
  • R Don, Stevenson Rd: Great Black-backed Gull - c250 - loafing on waste ground ; Herring Gull - c250 ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 3 - 2 adults,plus 1w ; Black-headed Gull - c200
  • Wadsley Common: Pink-footed Goose - c30 - over to NW
  • Walkley garden: Blackcap - 1 - Single female coming to fat ball feeder.

Wednesday 15th January 2020

  • Attercliffe: Peregrine - 1 - ad sat in shade on E side Bernard Road incinerator building ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w. Well marked GC's but otherwise looked OK. ; CASPIAN GULL - 1 - 1w Warren Street. Well marked GC's but otherwise looked just about OK.
  • Barlow Common: Yellowhammer - 1 ; Bullfinch - 3 ; Nuthatch - 1 ; Mistle Thrush - 2 ; Coal Tit - 1 ; Goldfinch - 1 ; Greenfinch - 1
  • Dog Kennel Pond: Great Crested Grebe - 1 ; Mallard - 6+ ; Coot - 1 ; Black-headed Gull - 80+ - Low count at both lakes pos due to shoot taking place.

  • Redmires Middle Res: Tufted Duck - 8 - 4 male,4 female
  • Rotherham Centre; Forge Island: Grey Wagtail - 1 - over towards canal @ 0800hrs
  • Silver Wood/Old Ravenfield: Yellowhammer - 14+ - 14 on upper-level of Pingle Lane Tip and probably a few more in adjacent stubble
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Raven - 1 - west over fields beyond western paddocks at 09.20
  • Stocksbridge: Willow Tit - 2 - in scrub near Steel Valley Walk.
  • Thrybergh CP: Great Crested Grebe - 4 ; Little Grebe - 5 ; Lapwing - c100 - On ploughed field adjacent to park. ; Pochard - 5 - 4 males 1female ; Tufted Duck - c80 ; Water Rail - 1
  • Upper Common, Scholes: Carrion Crow - 15+
  • Wharncliffe Side: Common Buzzard - 1 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - female ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - in observers garden
  • Woodhouse Tip: Stock Dove - 35+ - 1 feeding flock ; Meadow Pipit - 5

Tuesday 14th January 2020

  • Dore : Magpie - 20
  • Mill houses garden: Blackcap - 1 - female
  • Norfolk Heritage Park: Tawny Owl - 2 - male and female calls heard - regular occurrence ; Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - drumming from Jervis Lum area of park ; Treecreeper - 3 - all three on same tree ; Nuthatch - 1 - calling ; Blue Tit - 2+ ; Great Tit - 2+ - males "singing" ; Goldfinch - at least 15 - singing from tree tops ; Long-tailed Tit - 10+ - flock ; Magpie - 2+ - numerous magpies regularly visit the park and neighbourhood ; Jay - 1 ; Carrion Crow - 1 ; Woodpigeon - 90+ - one flock of approx 70 birds feeding in leaf mold under Turkey Oak avenue, probably on acorns, plus others in smaller groups distributed around park
  • R Don, Rotherham Centre: Cormorant - present - increased activity over past week, with 1-3 moving up/down river regularly throughout day
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Common Buzzard - 1 - NE/E @ 1005hrs ; Goldfinch - 10 - max ; Collared Dove - 1pr - copulating; local 'colonisation' underway!
