Friday 12th June 2020

  • Baslow: Nuthatch - 2 - Adult feeding recently fledged juvenile in garden
  • Bramall Lane: Pied Wagtail - 1 - over
  • Brincliffe Edge: Swift - 14
  • Gleadless Valley LNR: Grey Wagtail - 1 - Lees Hall Pond
  • Longshaw: Redstart - 3+ - Adult + at least 2 juvs ; Stonechat - 1 - male ; Nuthatch - 1 - heard ; Chiffchaff - 1 - heard ; Willow Warbler - 7+ - heard ; 324 - 3 - Red Deer stags grazing just to the side of the main car park
  • Millhouses Park: Swift - 2 ; Grey Wagtail - 1 - Juv
  • Norton Lees garden: Dunnock - 1 - juv
  • Orgreave Lakes: Pochard - 33 ; Curlew - 1
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Song Thrush - 1 - singing ; Grey Heron - 1 - E, pursued by irate BH @ 1310hrs
  • Thrybergh CP: Nuthatch - 1 ; Yellowhammer - 1 - down to just 2 males singing this year
  • Thrybergh Res: Grasshopper Warbler - 1 - Reeling in dip below dam wall at 21:00hrs
  • Walkley garden: Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1 - Juv on peanut feeder
  • Wharncliffe Side: House Sparrow - 2+ - Newly fledged juv on wall in observers garden being fed by male bird

Thursday 11th June 2020

  • Coombs Dale: Willow Warbler - 1 ; Whitethroat - 3 ; Stonechat - 3 - 1+ juv ; Swallow - 1 ; Swift - 1 ; Kestrel - 1
  • Ecclesall: Wren - 6 - Four fledglings on lawn mid-morning with parents keeping guard. One young taken by Jay late morning.
  • Firsby Res: Coot - 3 ; 319 - 1 - Perched in woodland near road. ; Mistle Thrush - 1 - In sheep paddock. ; Swift - 1 ; Chiffchaff - 2 ; Blackcap - 1 - Singing Male.
  • Graves Park: Red Kite - 1 - Flying East near bottom lake
  • Limb Valley: Chiffchaff - 4 - heard
  • Mayfield Valley: Red Kite - 1 - Flying above fields on Fulwood Lane
  • Orgreave Lakes: Hobby - 1 - chased and caught a Sand Martin before flying towards Treeton Dyke at 08.25. ; Little Egret - 1 ; Great Crested Grebe - 36 - Total throughout site
  • R Derwent, Calver Mill: Dipper - 1+ - adult feeding 2 fledged young
  • R Derwent, Froggatt: Robin - 1 - carrying food ; Moorhen - 2 - a pair with their nest 12 ft above river in alder tree
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Greenfinch - 2 ; Goldfinch - 8 - family party
  • Redmires Res: Curlew - 46 - in fields early evening
  • Ringinglow Road: Hirundine - 18+ - mainly House Martins, but some Swallows
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Mute Swan - 2+ - resident pair and 6 cygnets. Male now returned
  • Smeltings Farm: Swallow - 2 ; Swift - 1
  • Sothall: Curlew - 1 - nocmig sound recorded over the garden 0120hr
  • Stoney Middleton: Meadow Pipit - 1 ; Swift - 7 ; Kestrel - 1 ; 319 - 1
  • Whiteley Woods: Red Kite - 1

Wednesday 10th June 2020

  • Barlborough Hall: Red Kite - 1 - Flying slowly east over the village and being moved along by crows.
  • Birley Edge: Nuthatch - 4 - 2 adults + at least 2 juveniles at bird station in garden - first time young seen at feeding station with adults ; Coal Tit - 3 - 2 adults + at least one juvenile at feeding station in garden
  • Bowden Housteads Wood: Long-tailed Tit - 9 - A group of 9 independent juvs ; Swift - 31 - Feeding and screaming over wood.
  • Burbage Rocks: Ring Ouzel - 1 - Singing male.
  • Burbage Valley: Goldfinch - 3 ; Cuckoo - 2 - Heard calling throughout late morning ; Meadow Pipit - 30+ ; Whinchat - 2 - Superb males approx 200 metres apart singing and showing well from their chosen vantage points; one of which was in the top of a tree
  • Carr Forge Dam: Sedge Warbler - 2
  • Higger Tor: Reed Bunting - 1 - A surprise to see this at the top ; Snipe - 1 - Flew over the top "winnowing" loudly
  • Long Causeway, Redmires: Tree Pipit - 1 - Song flights from dead tree in cleared plantation. ; Lesser Redpoll - 1 - Stunning male ; Stonechat - 2 - Male and juvenile ; Snipe - 1 ; Curlew - 1 ; 319 - 1 ; Whitethroat - 2 ; Willow Warbler - 1 ; Meadow Pipit - 10+
  • Norton Lees: Jay - 1
  • Norton Lees garden: Long-tailed Tit - 3
  • R Don, Effingham St: Canada Goose - 1 - female again sitting on nest
  • Rawmarsh: Swift - 12 - max over
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Song Thrush - 1 - singing, 0400-0430hrs ; Mistle Thrush - 1 - singing briefly in evening
  • Redmires: Curlew - 32 - in fields off Brown Hills lane in evening
  • Redmires Res: Goosander - 1 - redhead on Bottom Res ; Herring Gull - 2 - ads on Bottom Res ; Curlew - 49 - feeding in fields early evening
  • Redmires Top Res: Whitethroat - one - Male supplying nest near roadside.
  • Ringinglow: Swallow - 1
