  • Redmires Bottom Res: White-fronted Goose - 1 - First-winter Russian bird arrived from N with 10 Greylags at 14:57, landed on bottom res but left N again with Greylags at 15:16 ; Greylag Goose - 70 - Several small parties left N late afternoon. ; Mallard - 45
  • Roundwood Golf course: Redwing - 3 ; Grey Heron - 2 - one stood on fairway, joined by a second from NW
  • Silverwood Lagoon: Barn Owl - 1 - hunting on pit top near Hollings Lane entrance at 07.35
  • Silverwood Pit Wood: Tawny Owl - 2 - Pair roosting unconcerned high above main Path. ; Mistle Thrush - 2 ; Nuthatch - 4+ - Numerous with plenty of alarm calls.
  • Stanage Edge: Red Grouse - 4 ; Robin - 1 - Only passerine observed in 2 hr walk . Snow covered moor but bright sun
  • Thrybergh CP: Little Grebe - 6 ; Great Crested Grebe - 16 ; Grey Heron - 1 ; Greylag Goose - C220 ; Canada Goose - C40 ; Pink-footed Goose - 100 - C100 WNW 10:20 ; Pochard - 16 ; Tufted Duck - C40 ; Gadwall - 6 ; Wigeon - 1 ; Shoveler - 1 ; Cormorant - 5 ; Mute Swan - 32 ; Water Rail - 1 ; Bullfinch - 8 ; Goldfinch - 10 ; Greenfinch - 8 ; Chaffinch - 10 ; Brambling - 2 ; Linnet - 100+ ; Fieldfare - 33 ; Redwing - 8 ; Blackbird - C20 ; Song Thrush - 5 ; 319 - 1 ; Sparrowhawk - 1 ; Little Owl - 1 ; Blue Tit - 10 ; Great Tit - 8
  • Underbank Res: Goosander - 1 - first for months
  • Worrall: Stonechat - 1 - female on wall next to Stubbing Lane.

Friday 8th January 2021

  • Beauchief Ponds: Mallard - c26 ; Moorhen - 2 ; Mandarin - 7+ - Difficult to see
  • Birley Edge: Blackcap - 1 - Male, first overwintering Blackcap here in 19 years
  • Crosspool: Tawny Owl - 1 - holed up in mist, in large tree at junction of Lydgate Lane & Marsh Lane ; Tawny Owl - 1 - photo
  • Green Moor: Tree Sparrow - 6
  • Handsworth garden: Chaffinch - 7 - Under feeders ; House Sparrow - 12 - On and around feeders.
  • Kimberworth Park: 319 - 1 - Low over Roughwood School then N toward Shepherd's Plantation @ 13:25.
  • Orgreave Lakes: Great Black-backed Gull - 54 - Roosting on ice ; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 16 ; Herring Gull - 582 ; Common Gull - 4 ; Black-headed Gull - C300 ; Wigeon - 58 ; Goldeneye - 5 - 3 males ; Goosander - 28 - At dusk ; Yellow-legged Gull - 2 - Adults ; Whooper Swan - 14 - 14 birds still present on small lower Orgreave lake near island.
  • Rawmarsh; Rockcliffe Road: Blackbird - 5 - 4m; 1f grudgingly sharing ivy berries ; Blue Tit - 2 - investigating nestbox
  • Rivelin Valley: Mallard - 20 - On Wolf Wheel and River below ; Mandarin - 6 - On Wolf Wheel ; Goosander - 2 - Pair on Wolf Wheel ; Grey Heron - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 1 ; Dipper - 2 - Pair at weir near Wolf Wheel
  • Thrybergh CP: Goldeneye - 9(5m4f)
  • Walkley garden: Blackbird - 8 - On grass and in fruit trees. 2 redwing with them. ; Starling - 50+ - Flying into lime tree in groups. Largest flock for 10 months.
  • West Wood, Tankersley + fields around Howbrook: Cormorant - 8 - On pylon overlooking Howbrook Pond - left towards Tankersley. ; Grey Heron - 1 ; Black-headed Gull - c150 - NW towards roost at Langsett ; Mallard - c140 - c130 on a large pond at a field side north of Howbrook. c10 on Howbrook fish ponds. ; 319 - 1 ; Moorhen - 1 - Howbrook fish pond ; House Sparrow - c20 - Howbrook village ; Goldfinch - 1 ; Meadow Pipit - 1 ; Lesser Redpoll - 8 - Flew from West Wood ; Wigeon - 1 - Female with Mallards. Surprise find! ; Siskin - c40 - West Wood ; Bullfinch - 2 ; Blue Tit - c40 - At least 5 groups in area, 1 in full song in West Wood. ; Mistle Thrush - 1 ; Great Tit - c10 ; Treecreeper - 3 ; Kestrel - 1

Thursday 7th January 2021

  • Aldwarke: Cormorant - 3 - on pylon ; Common Buzzard - 3 - soaring together
  • Aldwarke; Liberty Steel: Peregrine - 1pr - birds on adjacent chimneys for a while until both left SW. Within minutes, M caught/released/re-caught pigeon in flight over Eastwood before passing it to F on the wing. Both returned to Liberty where F plucked & ate prey on chimney with M looking on. M allowed to feed after 20 mins with F still mantling prey defensively. ; Sparrowhawk - 1 - circling over
  • Barlow Common: Siskin - 2 ; Treecreeper - 1 ; Grey Wagtail - 01-Feb ; Chiffchaff - 3 - all on the sewage beds ; Redwing - 1
